Welcome to the website of our summer home affectionately called "Cougar"! It is a 33' Cougar Model 289EFS Fifth Wheel. Now that winter is fast approaching, our beloved "Cougar" has been winterized and is taking a well-deserved break until next spring. But as soon as the snow disappears, we will be back out on the open roads enjoying our travels and using our RV at every possible opportunity!
We purchased our Cougar from Simmons RV in Anchorage back on April 14th, 2006. We had looked at various 5th wheels, travel trailers and class "C" motorhomes for three or four years debating as to whether we should get one, which type to get, and what we wanted in it. We looked at dozens of different models and floorplans before finding the "perfect" one for us. We had some very specific needs and this particular model seemed to fill them better than anything we had found thus far.
I had grown up in a family that loved camping but the pop-up tent trailer we started with back then was too small to really accomodate us. After 3 or 4 years of pop-up camping, we "moved up" to a slide in style pickup camper which was nicer - it had solid walls at least - but this was before the era of slide-outs so it too, was cramped for size.
When I decided to pick out an RV for my own family (me, my wife, our adult son, and adult daughter), I wanted to make sure we had one that we could all enjoy being in, and yet wouldn't have to go outside to change our minds! "Cougar" fits this need very nicely...the open floor plan, rear bunkroom, and slide out dinette give us a lot of floor space and room to get around in without tripping over each other every time we made a move!
Actually, this fifth wheel is the second RV my family has had...we bought a new travel trailer just the previous year, but we found out in short order that what we thought was a good layout for us was anything but! The shower was our primary beef - we had thought the little seat was a good idea, but it just wasn't big enough inside. Our trailer was a nice trailer - don't get me wrong. It just wasn't the right one for us. So we decided if we were going to do this RV thing, we may as well do it right!
Once we decided to "upgrade" our RV, we again began the long search for the perfect RV. We looked at more travel trailers and fifth wheels - this time with a more critical eye. Then we came across the Cougar 289EFS and knew that we didn't need to look any further! Because I belong to the Open Roads RV Forum at RV.net, and from seeing the various makes and models on the highways here in Alaska, I knew that there were a lot of Cougar fifth wheels on the road. So they must be doing something right. And the floorplan gave us more than we found in any other make or model.
So we told the dealer we wanted this particular model and started the financial wheels turning. Everything went so smoothly, you would think we came in with cash money! And the dealer "went the extra mile" with us when we told them we were concerned that the hide-a-bed sofa in the living room interfered with our kids going to the bathroom once it was made out. So we made a change right there on the dealer's lot. We told them we wanted a jackknife sofa instead and they went right ahead and ordered it! It meant we couldn't take our fifth wheel home with us at that time, but the extra wait was worth it. Once we did take possession, we had an RV that met all of our criteria and one that we can enjoy for years to come!
My membername and "handle" in the Open Roads Forum is ak_traveler so if you see me there give a holler! And if you happen to catch up to us in one of the campgrounds or RV parks here in Alaska, come on over and introduce yourself! We don't do much traveling outside the state (work constraints unfortunately!), but we are always eager to meet new folks and fellow RV'ers whenever possible.
